Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), cored and sliced

1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried sage)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil

1/4 cup dried cranberries (optional, for sweetness)

Fresh sage leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Chicken: Season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, paprika, and ground cinnamon. If you prefer a more intense flavor, let them marinate in the spices for about 30 minutes before cooking.

Sauté the Aromatics: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, sautéing until fragrant and the onions are translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Layer the Ingredients: In the bottom of your crockpot, place half of the sliced apples. Spread the sautéed onion and garlic mixture evenly over the apples, followed by the seasoned chicken breasts. Layer the remaining apple slices on top.

Mix the Sauce: In a bowl, mix together the chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and chopped sage. Pour this mixture over the chicken and apples in the crockpot. If using, sprinkle the dried cranberries on top for an added touch of sweetness and texture.

Cook: Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the chicken is tender and cooked through.

Serve: Once cooked, remove the chicken breasts from the crockpot. You may shred the chicken or serve it whole. Spoon the apple and onion mixture over the top and garnish with fresh sage leaves before serving.
